Argan Tree

Argan tree (Argania spinosa) is an endemic tree grows exclusively in south-western Morocco. Argan tree grows anywhere between the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and the heights of the Atlas Mountains up to 1500 meters altitude. They can survive at temperatures up to +50 °C. They generally lives for 150 years. However, they have been seen to live for more than 200 years. They can grow as tall as 10 meters. Old majestic trees can grow as tall as 20 meters and their branches can grow up to 50 meters in diameter. As well as being used for argan oil production, they are also extremely important for preventing soil erosion, since their roots can go as deep as 30 meters to reach water and moisture, and they can live for 200 years.

Because of these distinctive features of the Argan tree, also known as iron tree or tree of life, the areas where Argan tree grows has been announced by UNESCO as International Biosphere Reserve in December 1998.
